Applications are invited for the above post to work with Dr gregor Tanner, Dr Stephen Creagh and Prof David Thomas on an EU Horizon 2020 - funded project entitled “Noisy Electromagnetic Fields – a Technological Platform for Chip-to-Chip Communication in the 21st Century (NEMF21)”. This is an interdisciplinary, Nottingham-led, collaboration between mathematicians, physicists and electrical engineers from the University of Nottingham, the University of Nice Sophia-Antipolis, the Technical University Munich, the Institut Supérieur de l’Aeronautique & de l’Espace, Toulouse, IMST GmbH, Germany, NXP Semi-conductors and CST AG, Germany. The central aim of the project is to provide design tools for wireless Chip-to-Chip (C2C) communication, an important future technology.
The successful applicant will specialise in developing theoretical and computational approaches to the physical modelling of noisy EM fields in complex environments. A key characteristic of such systems will be the field-field correlation function. Using models of source correlation that are developed in collaboration with other partners in the project using a range of measurement and computational techniques, the applicant will develop correlation function propagators using methods recently developed in Nottingham for solving ray-tracing flow equations, in combination with Wigner function techniques, transfer operator methods and semiclassical approximations.
Candidates must hold or be near completion of a PhD, or equivalent, in a relevant branch of applied mathematics, physics or engineering. A good knowledge of theoretical and experimental approaches to dynamical systems and wave propagation is essential. In addition, a background in more than one of the following areas is highly desirable: high-frequency wave asymptotics, quantum chaos, ray theory, computational electromagnetics, RF or microwave laboratory measurements. Candidates should be confident, organised, have good communication skills and enjoy working as part of a team as well as independently. The successful candidates will be expected to contribute to the publication of scientific papers, and to their dissemination at relevant workshops and conferences. They should have evidence that the quality and quantity of their previous research outputs is commensurate with their level of experience.

This full-time position is available from 1 October 2015 and will be offered on a fixed-term contract for a period of 36 months.
